Jamaicans end DL season with third-place finishes
OLYMPIC finalists Ackera Nugent, Shiann Salmon and shot putter Rajindra Campbell all finished third in their respective events on Saturday’s final day of the two-day Diamond League final at Allianz Memorial Van Damme at King Boudouin Stadium in Brussels.
After Friday’s fireworks that saw Blake in the Men’s 100m and Tajay Gayle in the Men’s Long Jump win their first Diamond League trophies, third was the best the Jamaicans could produce on another cold day in Belgium to close out the six-months, 15-meet series.
Salmon, who won her first Diamond League race a week earlier, came on strong late in the Women’s 400m hurdles to place third in 53.99 seconds as Femke Bol of the Netherlands won in 52.45 seconds, holding off American Anna Cockrell- 53.71 seconds.
Janieve Russell was seventh in 55.94 seconds and Andrenette Knight eighth in 56.70 seconds.
After achieving one of her main targets with her win in Zurich, Salmon said Saturday’s race was about putting the cap on a long season.
“My goal this season was to run [sub 53.00 seconds], and I did that in my previous race so, mission accomplished,” she said.
World leader Nugent’s four-race winning streak ended as she placed third in the 100m Hurdles Final in 12.55 seconds (0.4m/s) while Danielle Williams was fifth in 12.62 seconds as Puerto Rico’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn won with 12.38 seconds.
Nadine Visser of the Netherlands was second in 12.54 seconds.
Campbell, the Olympic Games bronze medallist, did well to place third in the Men’s Shot Put with 21.95m as Leonardo Fabbri set a national and meet record 22.98m and Olympic champion Ryan Crouser of the USA was second with 22.79m.
Fabbri broke his own Italian record 22.95m set in May and the meet record 22.61m set by American Joe Kovacs in 2022.
Romaine Beckford was fourth in the Men’s High Jump, clearing 2.22m after early struggles. Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy won with 2.34m, ahead of Oleh Doroshchuk of Ukraine’s 2.31m, and Woo Sanghyeok of Korea, 2.25m
Roshawn Clarke led for most of the Men’s 400m Hurdles race but hit the eighth hurdle and was thrown off his rhythm and lost momentum, finishing fifth in 49.08 seconds, just ahead of compatriot Malik James-King who was timed in 49.37 seconds.
Brazil’s Alison dos Santos won the Diamond trophy with 47.93 seconds, beating Qatar’s Abderrahman Samba- 48.20 seconds and Estonia’s Rasmas Magi, 48.26 seconds.
