Glenmuir lead d’Cup trio to three straight wins
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Former champions Glenmuir High led a trio of schools to their third-straight win in the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition on Saturday, after clipping Garvey Maceo High 1-0 in their Zone I top of the tables clash in May Pen, Clarendon.
Port Antonio High and Happy Grove each chalked up their third victory as well with wins over Wycliffe Martin High and Morant Bay, respectively.
Ricardo Binns’ 29th-minute goal gave Glenmuir their third-straight triumph, ending Garvey Maceo’s two-game winning start, with Glenmuir taking over sole leadership of the zone.
It was the first goal Garvey Maceo were conceding this season, while Glenmuir High are yet to concede.
Port Antonio got the better of Wycliffe Martin High 2-0 at Carder Park, with Jeho Thompson giving them the lead after the 18th minute before Dwayne Rodgers added a second in the 54th minute.
Shevon Miller scored a brace to lead Happy Grove to their third in a row, beating Morant Bay High 3-1 at Morant Bay.
Defending champions Clarendon College made it two wins in a row in Zone H with a 2-0 win over Lennon High School, trailing Central High on goal difference.
There were also back-to-back wins for Manning’s School who hammered neighbours Godfrey Stewart 9-0; Anchovy High who scored a massive 1-0 upset against Rusea’s High by way of Maliek Stephenson’s first-half goal; William Knibb Memorial who were 5-0 winners over Holland High; and Spot Valley High who beat Cedric Titus 2-0.
Twelve-time champions Cornwall College had been leading 1-0 deep into their game against Maldon High when the referee blew off the game after one of the assistants was injured by a stone thrown from among a group of spectators.
Cornwall College had appeared to be on their way to the win with a 67th-minute goal from Shaheem Bernard before the game was prematurely called off.
Herbert Morrison, who competed for most of the game with 10 players after Dantay Morle was sent off in the first half, blanked St James High 3-0 with two penalties from Shaquan Walters and a second-half goal from Sceon Robinson.
Morle was shown two quick yellow cards late in the first half, within a few seconds, the first after a rash tackle on a St James High player and the second for arguing with the officials.
