Full recovery expected for victims of Burger King explosion
KINGSTON, Jamaica— The Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) in an advisory on Saturday said that two of three individuals who were admitted on Wednesday with burn injuries from the explosion at the Burger King outlet in New Kingston, remain hospitalised.
According to a press release from the hospital, one of the individuals remains at KPH in stable condition while the other was transferred to the Tony Thwaites Wing of the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) for continued care following consultations with the plastic surgery team at that facility.
The third person was treated and discharged.
The news release added that the patients are expected to make a full recovery but rehabilitation will be required after they are discharged from the hospitals.
“A team of consultant plastic surgeons has confirmed that the two patients receiving care at KPH and UHWI are expected to recover fully. However, rehabilitative care will be necessary following their discharge. Both facilities are providing comprehensive treatment, including wound care, plastic surgery, and rehabilitation services,” the release said.
KPH sought to clarify that it is capable of managing burn cases ranging from first and second-degree burns to some more severe cases requiring advanced interventions. It added however that in cases where specialised care beyond KPH’s facilities is needed, they may be referred to other institutions.
“At the same time, the public is reminded that patients have the right to seek treatment at any medical institution of their choosing. If a transfer is requested, KPH will ensure that the necessary medical reports are provided to facilitate continuity of care,” the hospital said.
The explosion on Wednesday is said to have been caused by a gas leak. Approximately six members of staff had sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
