Comehometome redeems herself with dominant win in Winston ‘Fanna’ Griffiths OD Classic
In a major turnaround, Comehometome redeemed herself with a resounding victory in the fourth running of the $3.75-million Winston “Fanna” Griffiths OD Classic on Sunday, September 8, 2024.
Just a month prior, she finished a disappointing fourth in the fillies-only Jamaica Oaks Classic on August 3, 2024.
On Sunday, under the guidance of jockey Tevin Foster and trainer Jason DaCosta,
Comehometome showcased her speed and endurance, leading from start to finish in the Graded Stakes contest for native-bred three-year-olds who did not win a Classic event prior.
In a dominant display, Comehometome crossed the finish line an impressive 6½ lengths ahead of her closest rivals, clocking a time of 2:03.2 (26.2 x 51.4 x 1:16.1 x 1:41.4) over the nine-and-half-furlong (1,900m) distance. Allegiance (Omar Walker) and Brenda Boy (Raddesh Roman) secured second and third place, respectively.
Foster, who expressed confidence in Comehometome’s ability to maintain a consistent pace and accelerate when needed, was vindicated by her performance.
“In the Jamaica Oaks, we had a little mishap. Each time she got a run, she got trapped in tight spaces, which reduced her run and I didn’t get a clear run in the straight. If I had a clean run in the straight, I think that we would have been victorious,” Foster told the
Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
“I know Comehometome is a capable horse with potential and she delivered. The trainer and I analysed the race and there was no speed in the race, so all that I had to do was to get a good break, then put her in front and control the pace.
“I was relaxed throughout the race and each time rivals came at her, she picked it up. When I left the half-mile pole, I asked her to run and she did,” Foster added.
With this win, Comehometome took her racing statistics to two wins, five second-place finishes, and one-third from 14 starts, with lifetime earnings exceeding $4.7 million.
