Christiana High and Alphansus Davis meet in d’Cup
CHRISTIANA, Manchester — Christiana High and Alphansus Davis High will meet at Christiana today, in an early season, top-of-Zone G clash between two teams that won their opening ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup games on Saturday.
Three schools, including Happy Grove High in Zone L, will be seeking back-to back-wins on a day when 22 games are down to be contested with five former winners kicking off their seasons and 11 teams that did not play for at least one season, all making their returns.
Yesterday, Titchfield High and St Mary High opened their seasons with impressive wins over Iona High and Horace Clarke High, respectively, both in Zone M.
Titchfield High scored their largest margin of victory in years with a 10-0 drubbing of Iona High at Rio Nuevo with Brian Williams scoring a double to lead the way.
At Highgate Community Centre, Khaleem Rose scored twice as St Mary High beat Horace Clarke High 6-1 with Oshaye McCoy, Tihiene East, Kihen Higgins and Aldeen Miller also got one each.
Christiana High, who finished second in their group last year and advanced as far as the quarter-final round, are coming off an opening game 7-0 win over Troy High and have enjoyed good results against Alphansus Davis High with four wins over the last two seasons.
Alphansus Davis High opened their season with a close 1-0 win over Knox College but has managed just one goal against Christiana High in their last four meetings.
Games between the two teams have been close; however, Christiana High will start as favourite today.
Happy Grove will hope to earn their first win on the field today after they were awarded a 3-0 win on Saturday after St Thomas Technical failed to show up for their home game.
Happy Grove and Robert Lightbourne High will be meeting for the first time in first-round play and while Happy Grove won their zone last year, Robert Lightbourne have lost all 16 first-round games they played over the last two seasons, scoring just six times in the process.
After serving in the capacity as technical director last season, Paul “Tegat” Davis will guide Rusea’s High as they take on Cambridge High in Lucea today, a matchup they dominated in 2023, winning both games with a 10-1 aggregate.
St Elizabeth Technical are expected to extend their winning run over Maggotty High, when they meet at Lacovia Community Centre in their Zone E game, while Frome Technical could be made to work for a win when they play away to Green Island High in Zone B.
