Unlocking mobility in the islands infirmaries
PHYSIOTHERAPY Week was observed September 2-6, with World Physiotherapy Day today, September 8. Physiotherapy stands at the forefront of healthcare in Jamaica, playing a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for countless individuals across the island. From urban centers to rural communities, physiotherapists are dedicated professionals who specialise in improving mobility, managing pain, and restoring function through targeted exercises and therapeutic techniques.
The Ministry of Local Government and Community Development in Jamaica plays a crucial role in overseeing and managing local governance and development initiatives across the country, particularly in rural areas. Not to be forgotten are the individuals in state care.
Desmond McKenzie, minister of local government and community development, has made it his mission to transform the care of those often regarded as “the forgotten“. The introduction of dieticians and physiotherapists on January 4, 2021, targeted the health and wellness of the residents from a nutritional and physical point of view, improving not only their quality of life, but also longevity.
The start of physiotherapy services in all 12 infirmaries and two golden age homes was not without setbacks and challenges. Being new to the organisation, these elements of care took some time for residents and staff to acclimate to. Through the establishment of schedules and connections with residents and staff, physiotherapy has become a staple in the infirmaries.
Starting with triaging residents into individual and group care, the task of the physiotherapist extends to educating residents and staff on the health benefits of exercises and mobility entirely. Mobility is not limited to just exercise but fun activities, presentations, and incentives for all.
Sports day is one of those activities — it is an event anticipated by the residents, the events are not only fun, but rewards of medals and trophies are great motivators. This enhances mental health and social engagement. Therapeutic activities like this can boost the mood, alleviate stress, and improve cognitive function by providing opportunities for social interaction and emotional support.
By nurturing both the body and mind, physiotherapy cultivates a conducive environment for holistic wellness.
The multiple aspects of the Ministry of Local Government means physiotherapy is not limited to the infirmaries but is incorporated in health fairs, homeless care, and community outreach. This bridges the gap between health care and non-holistic management.
Over 1000 residents are cared for by six physiotherapists employed by the ministry. They aim to restore mobility through muscle strengthening, flexibility, and balance training, enabling residents to perform daily activities with greater ease and confidence. Pain and discomfort are a prevalent concern among elderly residents, and therefore, they’re provided with a holistic approach through manual therapy ultrasound thermal modalities, by addressing underlying musculoskeletal issues and promoting proper body mechanics.
These elderly residents present a significant risk of falls and their resulting injuries. The role of physiotherapists is crucial in preventing and managing the outcomes of these falls.
By proactively addressing fall risk through gait, balance and coordination training, the modification of environmental hazard risk factors (removing obstacles, installing railings, use of walking aids) help safeguard residents and promote a more secure living environment.
In the dynamic landscape of the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, physiotherapy emerges as a cornerstone of comprehensive wellness. Physiotherapy enables individuals to maintain active and fulfilling lifestyles well into their later years. Moreover, the benefits of physiotherapy extend beyond immediate improvements, contributing to long-term health outcomes and potentially extending lifespan. It empowers these individuals to embrace life with vitality and vigour.
