Sashaun’s Rejoice!
Whenever Sashaun Williams feels down she looks to her Christian faith for solace. The New Testament book of Philippians, particularly chapter four, verse four, never fails to uplift her.
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again — rejoice! Celebrate God all day, every day,” it reads.
Rejoice is also the title of Williams’ first song, which was released on August 27, her birthday.
It is produced by Sherwayne Cowans.
“The song is really about the fact that, as Christians, we go through trials. I have an illness that requires medical attention and at times takes a toll on my mental state, but I decided that, despite my condition, I’m going to live my life, I’m going to rejoice,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
Born in Montego Bay, St James, Williams was raised by Christian parents in Trelawny. A recreational singer since her teens, she was encouraged by friends to take the craft seriously, and did so by providing harmony vocals on songs by artistes such as Shaundre Cowan.
As she prepared to record Rejoice, Williams listened to her favourite album for inspiration.
“I love CeCe Winans’ [self-titled] album because it resonates with me. It’s a personal statement that I can relate to,” she said.
