Man who tried to bribe cop pleads guilty
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The fate of a man who admitted to offering a cop $2,000 to buy himself a “drink” in exchange for not being prosecuted for a traffic violation will be decided at the next court session on September 27.
Zen Lyn, who is charged with bribery under Section 14 (2) of the Corruption Prevention Act, pleaded guilty in the St James Parish Court on Wednesday before presiding judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton.
According to the allegations, Lyn was driving his 2005 Toyota Hiace bus along Orange Street on June 24 when the policeman signalled him to stop and pointed out that his licence plate was obscured.
While the cop was writing the ticket, Lyn reportedly summoned him to the bus window, placed $2,000 in his hand, and said, “Buy yuself a drink and give me the papers; nuh bother with the ticket.”
However, the cop chose to take legal action, which led to Lyn’s arrest and formal charges being filed against him.
During Wednesday’s hearing, Judge Fairclough-Hylton deferred sentencing until September 27 and extended Lyn’s bail.
