Young Jamaica describes PNP’s refusal to contest by-election as cowardice
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Young Jamaica (YJ) has described the People’s National Party’s (PNP’s) decision not to contest the upcoming by-election in St Ann North East as not only a betrayal of the democratic process, but also an insult to the constituents who deserve a choice in representation.
Young Jamaica (YJ) is the youth arm of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
The by-election was announced by Prime Minister Andrew Holness early Wednesday following Monday’s resignation from Marsha Smith, with immediate effect.
The Opposition PNP later announced that it will not be contesting the by-election, set for September 30 this year.
Matthew Samuda will be the JLP’s standard-bearer.
“Their decision to abandon the electoral process reveals their unwillingness to face the people and is a direct infringement on democracy. We unequivocally condemn the PNP for their cowardice and dereliction of duty,” said Zukie Jarrett, a YJ coordinator.
“Denial of the people’s right to choose by refusing to participate, the PNP robs the electorate of North East St Ann of their right to a fair and competitive election. The democratic process thrives on choice, and the PNP’s absence strips voters of a crucial option, undermining the very foundation of our political system,” he added.
