Fastest time in three years for McPherson
FORMER national champion Stephenie Ann McPherson ran a season’s best 50.65 seconds, her fastest in three years, to win the Women’s 400m at the 60th Palio Citta’ Della Quercia in Italy on Tuesday.
The event is a part of the World Athletics Continental Silver Tour.
McPherson was one of three Jamaican winners at the meet, with Orlando Bennett winning the 110m Hurdles and Shashalee Forbes taking the Women’s 100m as Tajay Gayle, Romaine Beckford, Zandrion Barnes and Rajindra Campbell all had podium finishes.
McPherson rolled back the years to hold off training partner Sada Williams of Barbados who ran 50.67 seconds, and St Vincent’s Shafiqua Maloney, completing the Caribbean podium in 50.75 seconds.
Olympic semi-finalist Stacey Ann Williams was fifth in 51.12 seconds.
Bennett, who was an Olympic Games finalist, won the 110m Hurdles in 13.45 seconds (1.0m/s), beating American Cordel Tinch (13.46), with Cuba’s Roger Iribarne third in 13.54.
Forbes won her third-straight race since the end of the Olympic Games, running 11.17 seconds (0.5m/s), with Natasha Morrison completing a Jamaica one-two in 11.22 seconds and American Celera Barnes placing third in 11.23 seconds.
Gayle and Shawn-D Thompson both jumped 7.96m for second and third, respectively, in a dramatic Men’s Long Jump that was won by Anvar Anvarov of Uzbekistan at 7.99m (0.4m/s), all three to marks coming in the final round.
Thompson took the lead with his final jump before Gayle responded and took the lead on the countback with a better second jump — before Anvarov, who had a best of 7.82m up to then, passed both Jamaicans.
Beckford placed second for a third-straight meet, clearing 2.26m in the Men’s High Jump that was won by Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi (2.29m) while another Italian, Stefano Sottile, was third at 2.23m, the same as Japan’s Tomohiro Shonno.
Barnes equalled his season’s best 45.30 seconds in the Men’s 400m while Rusheen McDonald was fourth with 45.62 seconds, with Brazil’s Mathesus Lima winning in 44.99 seconds and Belgium’s Jonathon Sacoor placing third with 45.33 seconds.
Campbell, the Olympic Games bronze medallist, was third in the Men’s Shot Put, throwing 21.11m behind American Roger Steen who threw a season’s best 21.81m to win as Italy’s Nicholas Ponzio lpaced second with 21.40m.
Yanique Thompson was fourth in the 100m Hurdles in 13.15 seconds (-1.3m/s). Great Britain’s Cindy Sember won with 12.89 seconds, beating Tonea Marshall of the USA (13.03), and Sarah Lavin of Ireland who ran 13.11 seconds.
Rohan Watson (10.34 seconds) (1.3m/s) and Michael Campbell (10.45) were seventh and eighth, respectively, in the Men’s 100m that went to Canada’s Jerome Blake who equalled his season-best 10.15 seconds. Americans Pjai Austin and Ronnie Baker were second (10.16) and third (10.17), respectively.
