What led you to be the make-up artist you are today?
I first learned about make-up from my mom, who is an artist and a painter. As an adult, I never attended cosmetology school or got any formal make-up education. I am entirely self-taught, which I see as an advantage because it means I am constantly learning and pushing myself to further hone my craft.
Can you share a memorable moment from your career?
One moment that has stuck with me for all these years is when my mentor – the queen, Dame Pat McGrath, personally called me to do her eyebrows. That may seem small but having such a trailblazing icon in our craft trust me to work on her was a real “pinch me” moment.
Who inspires you as a make-up artist?
There are so many places where I draw inspiration, whether it is from my clients, other artists in the industry, a colour scheme I see on the runway, or a TikTok video on my feed. In my opinion, you can find inspiration anywhere and everywhere if you are open to finding it.
Are there any make-up myths you want to bust?
That black make-up artists can only do black skin. To the core, we are simply artists, with diverse, unique talents and range just like any qualified artist. Skin colour should not put us in a specified box. Instead, we should be granted opportunities that are not that of just doing black talent. We can do it all.
What is your philosophy on make-up?
Be your own kind of beautiful – customise it for you!
