JLP’s Marsha Smith resigns as MP
ST ANN, Jamaica – North East St Ann Member of Parliament (MP), Marsha Smith, has resigned with immediate effect.
Smith’s resignation as MP for the constituency comes after serving four years in the post.
Her resignation was confirmed in a statement to the media from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) a short while ago.
Earlier this year, Smith was replaced as constituency chairman in North East St Ann by Senator Matthew Samuda.
Samuda is expected to be the party’s standard-bearer in the constituency when an election is held.
Smith, who represents the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has come under fire from constituents who have accused her of being an ineffective Member of Parliament.
Smith defeated Keith Brown of the People’s National Party by 4,442 votes, polling 9,169 to her opponent’s 4,747 in the 2020 General Election.
