58% pass rate for mathematics, as City and Guilds Jamaica announces June 2024 exam results
THE City & Guilds of London Institute has announced the results of the June 2024 examination period. A key highlight is the mathematics pass rate, which has remained strong at 58 per cent, reflecting a steady performance from the candidates.
For the June 2024 exam cycle, 21,681 candidates sat the math skills exam, with 12,565 achieving a passing grade [distinction, merit and pass], leading to a 58 per cent pass rate — a three per cent improvement compared to the previous year. Within this cohort, the Ministry of Education subsidised grade 11 and sixth-form students achieved a 56 per cent pass rate which did not change over the June 2023 results.
The City & Guilds math skills results underscore the effectiveness of its staged approach which facilitates certification across three stages, with stage three matching closest to the regional exam.
This approach ensures a solid foundation in mathematics, equipping students with the skills necessary for both academic and professional success. Additionally, the unique assessment strategy, which emphasises practical application and real-world problem-solving, continues to resonate well with students and educators alike.
Commenting on the results, Marva A Duncanson, representative for Jamaica & the Caribbean, City & Guilds Caribbean Representative Office, said they are proud of the consistent performance in mathematics, as it reflects the hard work and dedication of both students and educators.
“The City & Guilds qualifications are designed to meet the diverse needs of learners, providing them with globally recognised credentials that open doors to further studies and career opportunities worldwide. Our staged approach ensures that no student is left behind, and every learner can achieve mastery at their own pace,” she said.
For the national cohort in June 2024, the English skills exam saw 16,283 candidates sitting, with 12,310 successfully passing, leading to a pass rate of 76 per cent, a three per cent decrease from 2023. The Ministry of Education cohort of grade 11 and sixth-form students achieved a 74 per cent pass rate, a reduction of 5 per cent over the June 2023 results.
Another standout achievement this year is the significant improvement in the customer service exam results. The pass rate for the June 2024 exam cycle rose by 14 per cent, from 51 per cent in 2023 to 65 per cent with 3,098 out of 4,790 candidates successfully passing.
The Skills Proficiency Awards also saw an improvement in the certification rating, rising to 72 per cent from 65 per cent in 2023. Out of 3,204 assessed candidates, 2,337 achieved certification across eleven occupational pathways [plumbing; electrical installation, carpentry, masonry, motor vehicle engineering; motor cycle repairs; food preparation, food & beverage; housekeeping; IT for office application; and welding].
“At City & Guilds, our goal is to continually elevate vocational education in Jamaica, ensuring our students acquire the skills needed to thrive globally, shared Duncanson.
“Our qualifications not only help learners progress in life and work, but also provide a platform for further studies worldwide, recognising that one size does not fit all.”
