Shanniqua Williams learns major lessons from World U20 experience
LIMA, Peru — Despite not getting past the first round in the women’s high jump, Shanniqua Williams, Jamaica’s only entry in the event at the World Athletics Under 20 Championships at Estadio Atletico de la Videna in Lima, Peru, said the lessons learned were invaluable.
Williams, the Champs Class 2 champion and winner of the Under 20 event at the JAAA National Junior Championships, failed to get past the first round in Thursday’s preliminaries, after clearing only 1.77m.
Williams, who has a personal best of 1.80m, finished tied for eighth place in her group and said afterwards, “it was a really good experience, because I came out here and saw what the competition is like on an international scale, and it only pushes me to do better in training and come back again in the next two years, because I’m still 17 years old.”
This experience, she said, would inspire her “to go back to the drawing board and come back bigger and better.”
Williams said the biggest lessons she learned was that “technique is very important, if you don’t have your technique, you will not get over that bar, so no matter what you do, you have to focus on your technique and think about what you’re doing in the competition.”
