Cambridge United dethroned in St James FA U-20
ST JAMES, Jamaica — Cambridge United’s run as champions of the St James Football Association/Guardian Group Under-20 competition came to an end after they were beaten 2-1 by Granville United in their semi-final played at WesPow Park on Sunday.
After playing out a 0-0 regulation time draw, Granville United edged the two-time champions and set up a meeting in the final against Reggae Youths who came from behind to beat Maldon 3-1 in the other semi-final that was also played on Sunday.
The winners in the semi-finals were runners-up in their first round groups and will meet in the final which is set to be played on Sunday at Wespow Park after the third place play-offs between the losing semi-finalists.
After going goalless for the entire 90 minutes of regulation and the first half of extra time, the second semi-final ended with fireworks with three goals in the final eight minutes of the second half of extra time.
Ajani Clarke gave Granville United the lead in the 112th minute and Kenu Gram doubled the advantage three minutes later when he scored in the 115th minute.
Cambridge United pulled a goal back in the 118th minute thanks to Kenroy Moran.
In the first game of the double header, Mikhail Samuels scored a first half double to lead Reggae Youths to the final, scoring in the 31st and 35th minutes after Kenroy Thorpe had given Maldon the lead in the seventh minute.
Fabian Gray added a goal in the 48th minute to secure the win for Reggae Youths.
