World U-20 Champs: Jamaica shut out of medals on opening day in Lima
LIMA, Peru — Jamaica failed to open its medal count on Tuesday’s opening day of the World Under-20 Championships at Estadio Atletico de la Videna in Lima, Peru.
The mixed 4x400m relay team finished fourth in their final and Shaiquan Dunn was ninth in the men’s shot put final.
Shanque Williams replaced Nastassia Fletcher on the second leg of the relay and joined Demarco Bennett, Marchino Rose and Alliah Baker as they ran three minutes 22.77 seconds, faster than the three minutes 24.77 seconds they ran in the morning’s heats.
Australia won the first gold medal of the championships, running a national Under-20 record three minutes 19.27 seconds. Poland was second with three minutes 20.44 seconds and China took the bronze with three minutes 21.27 seconds.
Dunn, who had qualified in the morning with 19.53m, could only manage a best of 18.92m in the final and just missed a place in the top eight.
