Althea Wright’s Visionz of Thee Heart transforming lives in Gregory Park
IN the heart of Gregory Park, a community nestled in the Sunshine city of Portmore, Althea Wright, founder of Visionz of Thee Heart, has embarked on a mission to transform lives through compassion, empathy, and kindness. Her tireless efforts recently culminated in a groundbreaking health, wellness, and information fair, a testament to her unwavering commitment to the community.
With a deep understanding of the struggles faced by her neighbours, Wright set out to bridge the gap in health-care access. She reached out to various entities, uniting them in a shared mission to create a healthier community.
The fair, which took place at Gregory Park Primary School on August 17, offered a range of services, including medical checks, cholesterol testing, pressure checks, HIV testing, syphilis testing, dental care, and assistance with Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education (PATH) and National Insurance Scheme (NIS) benefits.
Wright said that her foundation has been a lifeline for the elderly, providing crucial support with PATH benefits and navigating the complexities of NHT and NIS benefits. Many people were unaware of their eligibility.
“I was inspired to host the health and wellness fair because I saw the need in my community. Many people, both young and old, are struggling with health issues and cannot afford medical bills. I wanted to help make a difference,” Wright told the Jamaica Observer.
“This event stands out because it’s an annual community gathering that offers valuable information and resources from various entities in one place.”
Wright’s efforts have already borne fruit, with students achieving their HEART Trust/NSTA certificates with distinction and finding employment through her foundation. She said that her event has also helped families in need through a feeding programme.
“What sets this event apart is its uniqueness and scope. My foundation is the only one that has hosted an event like this, bringing together various entities to provide valuable information and services to the community.
“Students received their HEART Trust/NSTA certificates with distinction and gained employment through my foundation. I also received heartfelt thanks from families who benefited from our feeding programme,” Wright said.
Despite facing scepticism and adversity, Wright remained steadfast in her resolve. Her foundation stands as a shining example of the impact one person can have. The annual health, wellness, and information fair has become a beloved tradition, a celebration of community and compassion.
“The health fair has been a profoundly rewarding experience, fostering a deeper connection with the community and broadening my understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with special needs,” Wright said proudly.
“Many have expressed gratitude for my efforts, while others have discouraged me, citing the futility of charity work. However, I remain resolute in my mission, driven by the knowledge that my actions can make a tangible difference.”
As Wright looks to the future, her vision expands. She envisions dinner gatherings for the elderly, award ceremonies, and parenting seminars. Her heart beats with a passion to serve, to uplift, and to inspire.
“My main focus is to empower young adults to choose a career path that benefits them and their community. I want to make this event bigger and better every year, with more sponsors and entities on board. I also plan to host additional events that will bring value to my community,” she shared.
