Team Jamaica leaves for World U20s in Peru today
Jamaica’s full contingent of athletes and officials are expected to arrive in Lima, Peru, by Sunday evening for the start of the World Athletics Under- 20 Championships on Tuesday.
A team of officials, led by Head of Delegation Keith Wellington, left the island on Saturday, and a press release from Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) said this is “to fine-tune logistics for the arrival of the main group”.
The athletes will travel in three groups, with two from Kingston and another from Montego Bay on Sunday.
The first and largest group of athletes depart from Kingston at 6:30 am on Sunday, while another group leaves later in the afternoon, with the third group leaving Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay just before 1:00 pm, travelling via Panama. Despite the unusually late time for the championships, the Jamaicans are expected to perform well and the JAAA named a 43-member squad just over a week ago.
Eight athletes ranked in the top 10 in their respective events, including women’s 100m Under-20 world leader Alana Reid and 100m hurdles world leader Kerrica Hill, were named in the team that will represent Jamaica.
Hill, who won the gold medal in the 100m hurdles in Cali, Colombia, two years ago, and Reid, who won the bronze medal, are two individual medallists who will return to the championships. The meet has been shortened to five days, one less than previous stagings.
