Ackera Nugent smashes meet record at Diamond League in Poland
KINGSTON, Jamaica— Ackera Nugent broke the meeting record twice on her way to her first Diamond League victory, taking the 100m hurdles in 12.29 seconds (-0.5m/s) at Sunday’s Kamila Skolimowska Memorial at Silesian Stadium in Chorzów, Poland.
Nugent, the national record holder and national champion, was one of three Jamaicans who recorded wins at the 12th stop on the Diamond League circuit.
She joined another first-time winner Tia Clayton in the women’s 100m and triple jumper Shanieka Ricketts.
Nugent, who had broken the meet record of 12.34 seconds in the heats when she ran 12.30 seconds (0.6m/s), was even faster in the final where she beat American Grace Stark-12.37 seconds and two-time World Athletics Championships gold medallist Danielle Williams- 12.38 seconds.
The meet record was jointly held by Nigeria Tobi Amusan, who won in 2023 and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn who won in 2022.
Also in the heats, Williams won her race in 12.37 seconds (-0.3m/s) and Yanique Thompson ran 13.17 seconds but failed to advance.
Ricketts made up for her fifth place last year, winning the triple jump with 14.50m while Ackelia Smith was fifth with 13.78m (1.2m/s).
Rasheed Broadbell, who complained about a groin strain after his run, was second in the 110m hurdles, running a season’s best 13.05 seconds (1.1m/s). He was just edged by Olympic champion Grant Holloway of the USA who ran 13.04 seconds, reversing the result from Lausanne last week.
Olympic silver medallist Daniel Roberts, also of the USA was third in 13.24 seconds and Orlando Bennett fifth in 13.35 seconds.
Romaine Beckford set a new personal best of 2.29m for second place in the men’s high jump, passing his previous best of 2.27m as Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi won with 2.31m and Oleh Doroshchuk of Ukraine was third also with 2.29m.
Rushell Clayton was third in the women’s 400m hurdles, clocking 53.11 seconds and was followed in succession by compatriots Shiann Salmon in fourth place with 53.15 seconds, Janieve Russell was fifth in 53.59 seconds and Andrenette Knight sixth with a season’s best 53.68 seconds.
Femke Bol of the Netherlands set a new meet record, winning in 52.13 seconds, easily beating American Anna Cockrell in 52.88 seconds.
Ackeem Blake equalled his lifetime best 9.89 seconds (1.9m/s) as he placed third in the men’s 100m, behind American Fred Kerley-9.87 seconds and Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala- 9.88 seconds.
Former national champion Rohan Watson finished seventh with 10.18 seconds while Olympic Games silver medallist Kishane Thompson, who was expected to line up, did not start the race.
Roshawn Clarke was fourth in the men’s 400m hurdles event in 47.74 seconds and Jaheel Hyde ninth in 50.57 seconds.
Rajindra Campbell finished eighth in the men’s shot put with a best of 20.78m after starting with two fouls.
