Paul ‘Country’ Francis makes triumphant return to the saddle
Veteran jockey Paul “Country” Francis marked his return from injury with a thrilling win aboard the Philip Feanny-conditioned
Fearless Soul in Division Two of the $1.25 million Arthur Jones Memorial Cup on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
Fearless Soul came from behind runners to the Overnight Allowance race for three-year-olds and upward over 6 furlongs (1,200m) by 3¼ lengths in a time of 1:14.3 (24.2 x 48.4 x 1:01.3).
Fearless Soul won ahead of Grecian Light (Tevin Foster) and Sugar Daddy (Jordan Barrett).
Francis, who boasts over 800 wins in his illustrious career, had been sidelined after a fall from Power of Faith, but made a cautious comeback with two rides on the day.
In an exclusive interview, Francis revealed the extent of his injury:
“I braced my fall with my left hand, and immediately felt the pain. Thankfully, after doing the necessary tests, no bones were broken, but I suffered ligament damage that required treatment,” he said.
After a careful rehabilitation process, Francis was cleared to ride again and made the most of his opportunity with Fearless Soul.
Describing his winning ride, he said: “I was patient and waited for the right moment to strike. After leaving the three-furlong mark, I weaved through the pack, and Fearless Soul responded magnificently, leaving rivals in his wake.” Francis expressed gratitude to the trainer and owner for the winning ride, capping off a successful return to the saddle.
