Badminton academy looks to grow sport through inclusive competition
THE Jamaica Badminton Academy is gearing up for the highly anticipated Shuttle Showdown Tournament which is set to take place over two consecutive weekends, September 14-15 and September 21-22, at YMCA.
The tournament promises to be a marquee event for badminton enthusiasts, athletes, and the local community, offering a unique blend of competition, entertainment, and engagement.
One of the standout features of this year’s tournament is the introduction of the Beginner Category.
This new category provides an opportunity for those who casually play badminton, or are just beginning their badminton journey, to compete among peers with similar skill levels. This inclusive approach ensures that everyone, regardless of experience, has a chance to participate and enjoy the sport. Spectators can anticipate a high-energy environment, for an entrance fee of $500.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their coolers as the atmosphere is expected to be vibrant and lively. Traditional games like cards, dominos, and ludo are welcome, creating a festive and supportive environment for all.
Sponsors will also be on-site, offering a chance for participants and spectators to engage and win exciting prizes. The tournament aims to foster inclusivity, with around 100 participants ranging from ages 4 to 35 expected.
The categories are designed to cater to various skill levels and age groups. Beginners caters to casual players and those new to the sport; age groups include under-9 through to under-15 and focuses on junior players; while divisional is for national players and those who play competitively at a local level.
The tournament will span two weekends. On September 14 and 15, Beginners and B and D division players will compete for titles, while the second weekend (September 21-22) will showcase juniors and players competing in the A/Open and C divisions.
Each day’s matches will start at 9:00 am and conclude around 7:30 pm. The tournament will culminate in a closing ceremony on Sunday, September 22, 2024.
Jamaica Badminton Academy envisions making the Shuttle Showdown an annual flagship event, with plans to introduce additional tournaments throughout the year. One exciting future development is the launch of a prep/primary school tournament, with ongoing efforts to establish badminton programmes in schools across the island.
The current sponsors for this event are Premier Optical, Lifespan Spring Water, Dr Man-Gue Chin, Chas E. Ramson, N D Communications, and Shop Tech Goods.
