Teams jostle to join Holland PYC in JFF Championships semis
MILE GULLY, Manchester — Holland PYC of St Elizabeth have qualified for the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Championships after topping Group C of the play-offs with a 2-1 win over New Green CC at Mile Gully Community Centre on Saturday.
After three meetings between the teams in the group Holland PYC, who won two of the games, topped the tables with seven points to secure their place in the championships.
The other three places in the championships — the winners of the other groups — will be decided this weekend with the final set of games in the return-round schedule.
Spanish Town Police will only need a point from their Group A game against out-of-contention Seaforth SC; Progressive FC will also need a point against Axum United in their Group B top-of-the-table clash; while Duncans United will take their place from Group D with a point from their home game against Lucea United who are also out of contention.
Last weekend, Boys’ Town stayed in contention with a 3-2 win away to Seaforth in Group A; Axum FC also stayed in contention with a huge 7-0 win over Exchange United in Group B; while Duncans United took a stranglehold in Zone D after a surprise 5-0 win over 12th Street in their top- of-the-group clash.
At Mile Gully, Jevon Ambersley came off the bench to score in time added at the end of the second half for Holland PYC, during their come-from-behind 2-1 win in a game that would see the winners advance.
All three goals came in the final 26 minutes of the game when both teams finished with 10 players, again with late red cards.
Renardo Farquharson gave New Green the lead in the 74th minute but Errol Barrett equalised for Holland PYC before Ambersley, who came on in the 80th minute, scored in the third minute of time added to secure the win.
Boys’ Town were thrown a lifeline after a 3-2 win over Seaforth SC and completed their Group A schedule on seven points — one more than Spanish Town Police who have a game in hand against Seaforth and also have a better goal difference.
Axum United scored their first win — a big 7-0 thrashing of 10-man Exchange United at Annotto Bay Sports Complex — to improve to four points, three behind Progressive FC who they will play on Saturday.
Exchange United played with 10 men from the 32nd minute when Rashaun Thompson was sent off, while another teammate was shown a red card after the final whistle.
Oshane Pitter scored twice in the second half for Axum United while Javid Page and Tivoye Thompson had given the St Ann team a 2-0 half-time lead.
Romaine Powell, Hushane Hinds and Giovanni McLean also scored for Axum United.
Terron Eccleston came off the bench to score a nine-minute hat-trick for Duncans United in their win over 12th Street, in what was expected to be a close game between evenly matched teams which had drawn their first game 2-2, both sides having gone into the game separated by goal difference at the top of the group, both on 10 points.
The Westmoreland-based 12th Street finished with 10 players after top scorer Michael Kerr was sent off in the 69th minute when they were down 2-0.
Renard Cunningham had given Duncans United the lead in the 17th minute and Oshane Plummer scored a second in the 31st minute for a half-time lead.
Eccleston, who was introduced in the 74th minute, got his first in the 79th minute and then added two more in the 86th and 88th minutes.
In another Group D game, Granville United scored their first win of the series, beating Lucea United 1-0 at Granville, with Andre Tate scoring in the 57th minute.
