WATCH: Agriculture Ministry hands out supplies to fisherfolk in Parottee, St Elizabeth
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Floyd Green on Friday handed out supplies to fisherfolk in Parottee, St Elizabeth as part of the ministry’s Hurricane Beryl Fisheries Recovery Programme.
Parottee is one of the communities that remains without electricity since the passing of Hurricane Beryl on July 3. Last Friday, scores of fishers received vouchers, two rolls each of 1 ½ inch mesh wire to aid in the rebuilding of their fish pots and traps, and ice to store catch.
Speaking at the voucher handover ceremony at the Parottee Seventh-day Adventist Church, Green said, “This is a part of our overarching response programme. We have identified that we have to move quickly to get our fishers, to get our farmers back out there so that we can ensure that we are food secure.”
Green said the fishers to benefit from this recovery programme span several parishes including Clarendon, Westmoreland, St Elizabeth, Manchester and St Catherine.
He thanked the National Fisheries Authority team for identifying the fishers who would have suffered damage from the hurricane and further encouraged those not yet reached by the authority to visit their offices.
“The people who have not yet been reached please visit our offices, leave your information, we will do our verification processes and we will try to help. We will build back quickly and we will build back stronger,” Green said.
