Thompson, Williams sprint to wins on European circuit
YANIQUE Thompson and Christania Williams were respective winners in Germany and Austria on Saturday as international track and field resumed after the Olympic Games in Paris, France.
Thompson won the Women’s 100m Hurdles at the Internationales Nordthuringer Leichtathletikmeeting inside Stadoin am Goldner in Sondershausen, running 12.98 seconds (-1.8m/s) to beat Olympic semi-finalist Mariam Abdul-Rashid of Canada (13.25). Maayke Tjin-A-Lim of the Netherlands was third in 13.30.
Thompson, who just failed to make the final of the event at Jamaica’s athletics championships in June, had won her semi-final race in 12.99 seconds (0.1m/s).
Her Sprintech teammate Kadrian Goldson was second in the Men’s 100m, running 10.35 (-0.7m/s), the same time given to the winner Earl Simmonds of St Vincent and the Grenadines. Germany’s Julian Wagner was third in 10.39. Goldson had won his heat in 10.42 (-1.2m/s).
Former national champion Demish Gaye was second in the Men’s 400m with 46.92, behind Germany’s Tyrel Prenz (46.62). Simon Bujna of Slovakia was third in 47.25.
At the Internationales Josko Laufmeeting Andorf 2024 in Austria, Williams took the Women’s 100m Final with a 11.40 (0.3m/s) clocking. Maja Mihalinec Zidar of Slovenia was second with 11.56 and Isabel Posch of Austria was third in 11.59.
Candice McLeod, a 400m specialist, ran 24.88 in the 200m, finishing 10th overall.
