Atlantic Convoy, Fearless Soul dominate Arthur Jones Memorial Cup
IN a thrilling spectacle, Atlantic Convoy and Fearless Soul, trained by Patrick Lynch and many-time champion conditioner Philip Feanny, respectively, delivered a one-two punch, claiming both divisions of the 20th running of the $1.25-million Arthur Jones Memorial Cup on Saturday’s 10-race card.
Division One saw champion jockey Reyan Lewis guiding four-year-old, Canadian-bred, chestnut colt Atlantic Convoy to a resounding four-and-half-length victory, beating Sensational Move (Raddesh Roman) and Press Conference (Phillip Parchment) in the final stretch.
After biding his time behind the pace, Atlantic Convoy (Stormy Atlantic) unleashed a powerful surge, crossing the finishing line in an impressive 1:13.4 (24.0 x 48.0 x 1:00.2).
In Division Two, four-year-old chestnut colt Fearless Soul, ridden by Paul Francis, produced an electrifying come-from-behind performance, leaving Grecian Light (Tevin Foster) and long-time leader Sugar Daddy (Jordan Barrett) in his wake.
With a blistering finish Fearless Soul (Soul Warrior – Rumble) claimed victory by three and a quarter lengths, stopping the clock at 1:14.3 (24.2 x 48.4 x 1:01.3).
Atlantic Convoy was Lewis’s second winner on the day as he won aboard Papa Gray in the fourth race for trainer Barrington Dawes.
Also with two winners on the day were jockeys Shane Richardson and Tevin Foster.
Richardson opened the programme aboard Stanislaus for trainer Delroy Wisdom, and won aboard Antarctica in the $1.19-million Caymanas Park 65th Anniversary Trophy for trainer Errol Waugh.
Foster was successful aboard Burning Valor in the third race for owner/trainer Gregg Fennell and aboard Adira in the sixth race for trainer Carlton Cunningham.
Racing continues on Saturday.
