Coach Cameron upbeat ahead of Caribbean triathlon/aquathlon
Natasha Cameron, head coach of Jamaica’s triathlon team, is expecting a good all-round performance from the country’s athletes when they participate in the Carifta Games Championships in Barbados.
Competition is set to get underway this morning.
After competing in the triathlon, they will contest the aquathlon and the mixed relay events, respectively, on Sunday.
The Jamaicans will be field competitors in the 11-12 category; three participants in the 13-15 age group; and five athletes in the 15-21 category.
Last year, Jamaica failed to win a medal in the triathlon competition but did secure gold in the aquathlon competition.
According to Cameron, one of the team’s main focuses this year is to better last year’s performance at this year’s championships.
“This year we are poised once again to medal in the aquathlon competition,” Cameron said. “We got 31 points in the triathlon last year and so we are definitely aiming to equal that or definitely try to get more points this year. We are still pretty young in the sport and everyone is pretty much more developed than us, but we are getting there.”
She said the team is mixed with youth and experience and therefore, she is quite confident and upbeat that they will produce their best efforts for the country at the event.
“We have new beginners and we have our veterans and so it is about the growth of the sport and we want to expose them to the sport, but overall we have strong competitors in each category.
“We are prepared and we have done a lot of training, but as usual, the kids have a little bit of nervousness, but if they didn’t then that is where I would be worried,” said Cameron.
She pointed out that she expects that our senior competitors to win the bulk of the medals in their division for the country.
“We are hoping to get one or two medals in the 15 to 21 age group and so we are feeling good, and everybody is excited, and we are here. We have a 19-member team and we are just eager to go out there and perform,” she said.
