Campbell wins Men’s Shot Put in Germany
FRESH from his historic bronze medal-winning performance at the Olympic Games in Paris, Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell won the Men’s Shot Put at the Internationaler Thumer Werfertag at Stadion an der Wiesenstrasse in Thum, Germany, on Friday.
Campbell threw a best of 21.64m for victory at the meet which is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour.
It was a dramatic outcome for Campbell who recorded the winning throw in the final round, after trailing in third place following the first five rounds.
The two-time Jamaican champion had thrown 19.77m in the first round and then inched up to 19.78m in the third round. He then fouled his next two throws.
Campbell, however, snatched the victory with the winning throw in the final round. Great Britain’s Scott Lincoln was second with 20.74m and Tomas Stanek of the Czech Republic was third with 20.46m.
Canada’s Sarah Mitton rebounded from her disastrous Olympic Games by winning the Women’s Shot Put with 20.18m, beating the German pair of Alina Kenzel (18.69m) and Katharina Maisch (17.84m). Kenzel’s throw equalled her personal best.
