Franklin, Foster join Hibbert as notable absentees from World Under-20 team
KINGSTON, Jamaica — American-born quarter-miler Skyler Franklin and US-based long jumper Alliyah Foster join world under-20 triple jump record holder Jaydon Hibbert as notable absentees from Jamaica’s team for the upcoming World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Lima, Peru.
The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) released the names of the 43-member team for the August 27-31 championships on Wednesday.
Hibbert, who won the Under-20 long jump at the JAAA National Championships in June, and was fourth in the men’s triple jump at the recent Olympic Games in Paris, was expected to compete in the men’s long/triple jump double in Lima but picked up an injury which ended his season.
Franklin, however, was not able to get a Jamaican passport in time, according to Head of Delegation Keith Wellington.
“She was unable to present a Jamaican passport and she could not compete without that document,” Wellington said.
Franklin won the girls’ under-20 400m and was second in the 200m at the national junior trials in June. She appeared to have applied for her passport from the United States but the document was not processed in time for when the entries were to be confirmed.
Foster, who won the long jump at the trials and is ranked number seven in the world at the under-20 level, reportedly withdrew her name from the team.
Meanwhile, Kerrica Hill, who won the gold medal in the 100m hurdles in Cali, Colombia two years ago, and Alana Reid, who won a bronze medal in the women’s 200m, are among the big names in the team that is expected to leave on Sunday.
