Gas station to be constructed on Portmore leg of Highway 2000
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica— TransJamaican Highway Limited (TJH) announced on Wednesday that RUBIS Energy will be constructing a gas station on the Portmore leg (T2) of Highway 2000 East-West.
TJH, the developer of the six-lane carriageway, said in a news release that the gas station should be opened in 2025.
“The service station on T2 is designed to enhance the customer experience on the highway. We do anticipate that they will be able to fill up with RUBiS Energy petrol or diesel but also enjoy the services of the convenience store,” explained TJH Quality and Maintenance Engineer Manager, Melbourne Lyn-Cook.
“The Portmore highway corridor services 30,000-40,000 vehicles daily and we know our commuters will take advantage of the rest stop, pick up groceries or food or snacks at the restaurant on the way home in the evenings,” Lyn-Cook added.
This station will be the second on Highway 2000 East-West after Total Jamaica Limited opened a service station on the eastbound Old Harbour ramp in St Catherine in 2019.
The gas station will be contained on 0.4 hectares of land, west of the current Highway 2000 East-West sales and administrative offices, the release said.
“The station will not impact the national heritage site at Fort Augusta,” TJH said.
Motorists coming from Kingston will enter the gas station from where the parking lot is currently located.
Lyn-Cook explained that, on completion, motorists coming from Portmore can enter the gas station from Port Henderson Road (Back Road) before entering the highway via the flyover bridge.
“We anticipate that the greatest demand for gas will be in the evening. That was the reason why the mapping focussed on the westbound side, as a convenience to our customers returning home after work or after activities in the Corporate Area,” Lyn-Cook said.
