FOOD has always been a powerful bridge between cultures, and the unique relationship between Norway and Jamaica exemplifies this beautifully. Despite vast differences in climate, geography, and traditions, these two countries are connected by their shared love of salt fish. Norway, known for being the largest seafood exporter globally, supplies products that contribute to over 37 million seafood meals daily to people in more than 150 countries, including Jamaica.
Jamaica is one of the largest consumers of salt fish per capita in the world, with Jamaicans eating salt fish slightly more than twice a week on average. Having been imported to Jamaica since the 1950s, salt fish is the second most popular dish at every meal in Jamaica. To highlight that special relationship between Norway and Jamaica through salt fish, Orjan Olsen of the Norwegian Seafood Council was on the island recently. Some of his activities are captured in this Business Social.
