Jamaica’s women’s 4x400m team optimistic of podium finish
PARIS, France — Jamaica’s 4x400m relay team members are feeling upbeat about their chances of securing a podium finish in Saturday’s final at the Olympic Games.
The final is scheduled for 2:22 pm Jamaica time.
The Jamaican team, comprising Andrenette Knight, Ashley Williams, Charokee Young, and Stephenie McPherson (running in that order), clocked 3:24.92 minutes to win their semi-final at Stade de France on Friday.
With the joint fourth-fastest time heading into the final, the team is optimistic about repeating or surpassing the country’s bronze-medal performance from Tokyo in 2021.
The United States hold the quickest time of 3:21.44 going into the final.
McPherson, the veteran of the team at age 35, expressed confidence in the squad, even though she’s unsure if the same line-up will be used in today’s final.
“I am feeling good, and thanks to these three girls because they didn’t give me any work to do on that final leg,” she said. “Being in a final is always a plus because that is the objective — to make the final. Whatever comes, comes, as you have to be in it to have a chance of winning a medal.”
Young, who on her leg propelled the team from third to first place, is equally excited about their chances in the final.
“I am really excited for the final because I feel like each of the ladies went out there and did a pretty good job,” Young said. “I am a pretty experienced relay runner so just to come out here and actually compete at the Olympics — that’s a big deal for me. It will be amazing if we get a medal in this event, and I am looking forward to that.”
Knight, who ran well on the opening leg, shares her teammates’ optimism about winning a medal in today’s final.
“The coaches do a pretty good job of putting together the best team, and we are confident they will send out the best, winning team to represent Jamaica. We are pretty excited to come out here and finish the job tomorrow with a medal,” Knight stated.
