‘A labour of love’
Sandals volunteers provide a hot meal and care for the homeless in St Ann
IT was a labour of love for team members from Sandals Dunn’s River and Sandals Royal Plantation who recently extended a helping hand to the homeless and mentally ill in Ocho Rios and St Ann’s Bay.
The homeless and mentally ill were treated to a hot meal and some much-needed personal interaction at the drop-in centre in Bucksfield, Ocho Rios.
The initiative, which is part of the resorts’ commitment to giving back to the community, saw team members volunteering their time and resources to make a positive impact on the lives of those in need.
“We are passionate about assisting the less fortunate and making a difference in our community,” said Sandals Royal Plantation General Manager Omar Robinson.
“We believe that everyone deserves a little kindness and compassion, and we are dedicated to doing our part to make a positive impact,” added Robinson.
The homeless individuals were treated to a delicious meal, prepared by the resorts’ culinary teams, and had the opportunity to interact with the team members, who showed them care and attention.
“This initiative is a testament to our commitment to giving back and making a difference in the lives of others. We will continue to look for ways to support those in need and make a positive impact in our community,” said Robinson.
The drop-in centre is a haven for less fortunate in the town, where they are able to receive meals, take a hot bath and receive a change of clothing. It also serves as a night shelter for those in need of a place to lay their head.
Suzette Prince, administrator/ manager of the drop-in centre, lauded the Sandals team for taking the time out to care for the underserved.
“The fact that so many team members from your organisation saw it fit to volunteer their time and not just serve food, but sing choruses and engage in meaningful conversations with the homeless here shows how much you care,” said Prince.
She added that the centre also provides counselling and recreational activities, “but its main aim is to rehabilitate and reintegrate persons back into society. From this building will emerge the services that will deliver relief and a sense of dignity to the homeless people of this parish.”
“Donovan”, who lives on the streets of Ocho Rios and the self-styled spokesman for the homeless group, thanked Sandals for what he described as a “delicious meal” and said he looked forward to regular visits from the hotel workers to the centre. “We love having you here, so do come back more often,” said Donovan.
In response Sandals Regional Public Relations Manager Ian Spencer said lunch will be served to the group once each month.
“Our presence here reinforces the emphasis Sandals places on giving back. We are delighted to not just serve food but spend quality time with the individuals and we will continue to assist where possible.”
“For us at Sandals Resorts, this is indeed a labour of love,” said Spencer.
