Jamaica makes mark at US Pool Checkers Championships
KINGSTON, Jamaica — In a ground-breaking achievement, Jamaica’s Ricardo Roach clinched the silver medal in the prestigious Masters Division at the four-day American Pool Checkers Association (APCA) Championships in Chicago, Illinois.
Roach’s remarkable accomplishment has ignited celebration across the local fraternity.
Roach’s achievement marks a milestone for Jamaica. He became the first entrant from the island to compete in the Masters Division. He amassed 58 points.
Had he won, Roach would have earned an automatic promotion to the elite Top Masters Division for next year’s championship. Master Anthony Tangwa, an African living in the US, claimed first place with 64 points.
Jamaica’s other representative at the championship, Jermaine Delattibudiere, placed a commendable sixth in the Top Master category but also received a trophy.
It was the second time Delattibudiere was receiving a trophy in that category. He also placed sixth last year. Trophies were given to the top 10 individuals in the Top Master Division received trophies.
Delattibudiere is a deputy superintendent of police who works in the St Elizabeth division.
The Jamaicans’ consistent and outstanding performances have earned recognition from APCA president Albert Harrison, who commended their achievement and dedication to competing at a high level.
The 55th Annual APCA Championships brought together top players from the United States, the Caribbean, Africa, Ukraine, and other regions. They competed in five divisions ranked from one to five, with the Top Masters Division being the most esteemed.
