#ParisOlympics: Kishane Thompson mines silver in Olympic men’s 100m
KINGSTON, Jamaica— Kishane Thompson delivered a silver medal as he ran 9.79 seconds (1.m/s), the same time as winner Noah Lyles of the USA in the final of the men’s 100m at the Olympics at Stade de France in Paris on Sunday.
It was the third medal won by Jamaica at the Olympics after triple jumper Shaneika Ricketts won a silver and shot putter Rajindra Campbell got a bronze on Saturday.
Thompson’s medal was the first for a Jamaican man in any major global championships since Usain Bolt’s bronze at the World Championships in 2017.
Running only the eighth race of the season, the 23-year-old held his nerves to win his first medal at any level in only his second major final.
Oblique Seville, who looked supreme in the semi-finals, finished eighth in 9.91 seconds.
After being held for what seemed to be a longer than usual time at the start line, Thompson was just edged on the finish line by the American who added the Olympic title to the World Championships he won in Budapest last year, the two being separated by a thousandth of a second.
Former World Athletics champion, Fred Kerley was third with a season’s best 9.81 seconds.
