Weight as always will stop a train, much less Atomica
The 2024 She’s A Maneater Trophy at Caymanas Park saw a notable victory by
Funcaandun, trained by Jason DaCosta and ridden by Jordan Barrett.
However, the race’s outcome was also influenced by the significant weight allocation, which favoured the winner. Atomica, carrying the maximum allowed weight of 126lb, conceded 14-22 lb to its five rivals, including Funcaandun.
As the race unfolded, Mamma Mia set a blistering pace, with Atomica struggling to keep up due to its weight disadvantage. Meanwhile, Funcaandun trailed behind, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. With three furlongs to go, Barrett made his move, and Funcaandun responded with an impressive acceleration, leaving the field behind.
In the end, Funcaandun won convincingly by 7 ¾ lengths, completing the mile in 1:39.0.
Mamma Mia fought gallantly to finish second, three lengths ahead of a fading Atomica.
The result highlighted the impact of weight allocation on race outcomes, as Funcaandun’s lighter load proved decisive in its victory.
In his post-race interview, the trainer of Atomica, Gary Subratie, had little doubt about the performance of his charge.
“The handicaps of the race were against Atomica…allowing such a large chunk of weight to well-accomplished rivals proved to be her undoing. Yet such is racing, and for sure we will come again, when hopefully she will race under better handicaps.
“You have to understand that there are not many races available for Atomica, so when one is available we have to race,” Subratie said.
When will Atomica race again?
A final decision has not yet been taken. Preliminary checks after she returned from the Saturday race indicate that she is okay. Still, until the final checks are made by the vet, and after consultation with the owner, her next race will be decided on,” Subratie said.
