Man accused of triple murder remanded
MONTEGO BAY, St James — John Lee Roach, who has been charged with three counts of murder, will have to adjust to the restrictions of incarceration as no bail request was filed on his behalf during his appearance in the St James Parish Court on Wednesday.
The 32-year-old St James resident is charged in connection with the killing of 26-year-old Rashaun Antanio Williams, 17-year-old student Jaydon Verrol Bennett, and 62-year-old fisherman David West, all of King Street addresses in the parish.
During Wednesday’s court proceedings it was stated that the post-mortem reports had not yet been completed and no specific timeline for completion was provided.
Additionally, Roach was without legal representation when the case was called up for mention.
However, attorney-at-law Chumu Paris informed the court that he was approached to represent the defendant but decided against submitting a bail application at this time.
The presiding judge, Kaysha Grant-Pryce, then ordered that Roach be held in custody until October 18.
According to the allegations, the police received reports of a shooting in the Upper King Street area of Montego Bay around 5:00 pm on July 9.
They responded immediately but a shoot-out with Roach ensued when they got to the scene. Roach escaped via a gully, leaving behind two weapons, according to police reports.
During a search of the scene Williams was found on the main road with gunshot wounds to the left side of his face and upper body while Bennett was found on a bridge with gunshot wounds to the right side of his neck. West had gunshot wounds to the right side of his face and was found in his yard.
The victims were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead.
