Man who used forged cheque to buy motor vehicle back in court today
A man, who used a forged check to acquire a motor vehicle worth around $3 million, had his case resolved through mediation during his appearance in the St James Parish Court last Wednesday.
Shaquille Williams appeared before presiding judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton, charged with obtaining property by forgery.
The prosecution alleged that Williams visited the complainant’s car mart in St James earlier this year to view a black 2016 Toyota Voxy that he intended to buy.
Upon inspection of the vehicle, arrangements were made for payment to be done through a wire transfer.
Williams later submitted a manager’s cheque made out to the complainant.
The complainant, believing he had received complete payment, handed over the vehicle to the defendant. Subsequently the complainant discovered that the manager’s cheque had been forged.
The matter was reported to the Area One Fraud Squad and Williams was arrested and charged.
During the hearing on Wednesday, there was a temporary adjournment of the case to allow the parties to engage in a mediation session with a mediator who was in attendance at the court.
Upon revisiting the case, the court was informed that an amicable resolution had been reached between the parties, resulting in the defendant making a payment to the complainant.
Fairclough-Hylton then scheduled another hearing of the case for today while extending the bail which had been granted to Williams.
He is expected to pay over the balance of the money today.
