Security guard found guilty in Haile Clacken murder trial
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Shawn Cole, the security guard on trial for the 2017 killing of 38-year-old Haile Clacken, has been found guilty of murder.
The verdict was handed down in the St Elizabeth Circuit Court in Black River on Tuesday. The jury trial started two weeks ago on July 15. Cole is scheduled to be sentenced on September 20 in the Home Circuit Court.
Haile Clacken, who struggled with bipolar disorder, was shot dead by Cole in his home parish on June 23, 2017, after climbing on an armoured truck. His death sparked outcries that an innocent life was taken as well as appeals for more public education on mental health.
Cole was granted bail in the sum of $1 million when he made his first court appearance in July 2017.
