Nigerian sprinter to miss Olympics 100m after alleged blunder by federation
Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili will miss the women’s 100m at the Paris Olympics after she was allegedly left off the entry list by the African country’s track and field authorities, according to media reports.
Ofili, who won the women’s 100m at the Nigerian Championships in June, blamed the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the National Anti-Doping Committee (NADC) for her omission.
The 21-year-old who ran a season’s best 11.06 seconds at her national championships was expected to join Tima Godbless and Rosemary Chukwuma in the women’s 100m for Nigeria when the track and field schedule of the Olympics gets underway on Friday.
The Louisiana State University athlete wrote on social media on Tuesday, “It is with great regret that I have just been told I will not be competing in the 100 meters at this Olympic Games. I qualified, but those with the AFN and NOC failed to enter my name. I have worked for 4 years to earn this opportunity. For what…to not be entered and compete at the Olympic Games because the responsible organization failed to enter me?”
She also wrote “Please remember, in the last Olympic Games I was not able to compete because AFN, NADC and NOC failed to release funds for athletes in the USA to be tested, which made 14 Nigeria athletes that qualified to not compete. Now THIS…….If those responsible are NOT held accountable for taking this opportunity from me, neither organization can EVER be trusted in the future! Next one is the 200meters, I HOPE IM ENTERED.”
Ofili along with several other Nigerian athletes, including Blessing Okagbare, were prevented from competing at the Tokyo Olympics as they were disqualified by the Athletics Integrity Unit.
