Book festival’s fairy dust promises magic beyond the pages
The Book Fairy Festival JA’s whimsical celebration of literature, creativity, storytelling and wellness will grace the island’s shores, Thursday, July 25, 2024 to Sunday, July 28, 2024 at The Summit in New Kingston. Geared towards book lovers and avid readers, the immersive, family-friendly, three-day event was designed to inspire a love for reading as well as wellness among both Jamaican children and adults.
Founder of the festival Shanique Sinclair believes the event will change the reading landscape and quality of life in Jamaica as the event grows.
“The goal is to create a literary haven, fostering a passion for reading and wellness that positively impacts mental and emotional well-being ultimately contributing to Jamaica’s socio-economic climate. The Book Fairy Festival brings the magic of books to life through interactive activities, author chats and creative writing and wellness workshops. It is a day dedicated to highlighting the power of imagination and the joy of discovering new stories through literature,” she said in a release to the Jamaica Observer’s Bookends.The Book Fairy Festival JA is an annual event dedicated to promoting literacy and a love of reading in Jamaica through a shift in the existing reading culture. Its mission statement is “to create a magical space where stories come to life igniting passion in Jamaican people while creating an atmosphere for therapy, wellness and personal development. Through engaging activities and community involvement we aim to renew and restore a culture of reading and creativity in our society”.
Authors scheduled to take to the Book Fairy stage include Mateo Askaripour (The Great Hemisphere), Kennedy Ryan (Before I Let Go), Jonathan Escoffery (If I Survive You), Roland Watson-Grant (Sketcher), Yvonne Bailey Smith (The Day I Fell Off My Island), Callie Browning (The Girl With the Hazel Eyes), and Alejandra Andrade (Moonstruck at Midnight).
Festival attendees can look forward to a variety of engaging activities, some of which include local and international author chats and book signings, storytelling sessions, creative writing workshops, and morning yoga sessions, among others.
