Extensive renovations breathe life into Falmouth Hospital
MINISTER of Health and Wellness Dr Christopher Tufton officially opened an operating theatre at Falmouth Public General Hospital in Trelawny Friday, which was extensively renovated at a cost of $45 million.
With the completion of the works, the hospital now has four equipped and functioning operating theatres, enhancing its capacity to deliver quality health-care services to the public.
The operating theatre is one of two facilities at the hospital that have undergone infrastructure upgrades totalling approximately $100 million.
A major overhaul of the hospital’s walkway system was also recently completed at a cost of $49 million. The previously dilapidated structures have been replaced with modern, covered pathways that facilitate easier movement of patients and staff between buildings.
Dr Tufton highlighted the remarkable transformation of the hospital over the past five years.
“Five years ago, Falmouth hospital had fewer than 100 beds…today, Falmouth hospital has over 170 beds with 40 of those beds dedicated to Cornwall Regional Hospital,” he said.
“So, for all intents and purposes, we have [almost] doubled the bed capacity of the institution. That is a positive, and we must celebrate because the parish deserves it,” he said.
Dr Tufton noted that there are still areas requiring attention, such as the maintenance of green spaces, repair of damaged windows in the accident and emergency department, and upgrading of the hospital’s entrance to make it more welcoming and inviting.
