Dindyal spins Guyana to second win in regional U-19 Super50
Redwood helps defending champions Jamaica to bounce back
KINGSTOWN, St Vincent (CMC) — Off-spinner Mavendra Dindyal followed up a half-century from Jonathan van Lange with another destructive spell to bowl Guyana to their second win in the West Indies Men’s Under-19 Super50 Championship on Wednesday in St Vincent.
The West Indies Under-19 tweaker bagged seven for 24 from only four overs, and the Guyanese claimed a 122-run win against the Leewards in their second-round match of the 50 overs-a-side tournament.
A damaging spell from Tamarie Redwood enabled defending champions Jamaica to rebound from a first-round defeat against Guyana the previous day to prevail against host Windward Islands, and newly minted two-day champions Barbados beat Trinidad and Tobago by three wickets.
At Park Hill, Dindyal followed up his five wickets the previous day with another skilful spell that sent Leewards tumbling to 127 all out in 29 overs, replying to the Guyana total of 249 for eight off 50 overs.
Van Lange supported with two for 19 from four overs with his medium pace, but the Leewards had no answer for Dindyal.
T’yanick Honore hit three fours and five sixes in the top score of 56 off only 45 balls, and opener Devanand Singh got 20, but the rest of the Leewards batting failed to make an impression.
Earlier, van Lange struck seven fours and three sixes to lead all scorers on the day with 77 off 76 balls and set the foundation for the Guyanese total after they decided to bat.
Opener Rampertab Ramnauth supported with 41, Dindyal proved his effectiveness with the bat, scoring 39, and Riyad Latiff made 23, while Matthew Miller was the most effective bowler for the Leewards, taking three for 46 from his allotted 10 overs.
At Cumberland, Redwood snared five for 18 from eight overs and led the demolition of the Windwards batting for 96 all out in 28.2 overs after his side won the toss and decided to field.
Only three Windwards batsmen reached double figures, with Theo Edward leading the way with 27 and Steven Abraham Jr in tow with 22.
None of the Jamaican batsmen reached 20, and they appeared to have a crisis of confidence, but they found the winning formula and finished on 98 for seven in 20.3 overs.
At the Arnos Vale Sports Complex, defiant batting led by Joshua Morris with 45 and West Indies Under-19 Nathan Sealy with 41 enabled Barbados to limp to victory against T&T.
Spin, the eternal bugbear of Barbadian batsmen, raised its head again when leg-spinner Aneal Rooplal grabbed three for 24 from his allotted 10 overs to make their chase of 162 a little more intriguing.
But Sealy added 52 for the sixth wicket with Preston Clarke before he was lbw to Fareez Ali with 15 required from 58 balls.
The Barbadians also lost Jatario Prescod lbw to Aaidan Racha for 11, with one run required – but Zishan Motara came to crease and hit the winning run with 40 balls remaining.
Andrew Rambarran had earlier propped up the T&T batting with 69 from 83 balls that included four fours and three sixes, and Joshua Davis made 26 – but Saurav Worrell undermined their batting with four for 23 from nine overs, and they bowled out for 161 in 47.3 overs.
The tournament continues on Friday when Barbados face Jamaica at Park Hill, T&T meet Guyana at Cumberland, and an all-islands derby between the Windwards and Leewards takes centre stage at Arnos Vale Sports Complex.
