Digital One to set record straight in Donald Wehby Snr Trophy
TWELVE runners are down to compete in tomorrow’s $1.25-million Donald Wehby Snr Trophy, an Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over five furlongs (1,000m) straight.
Below, the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide takes a look at each runner and their chances of winning.
1. SHE’S MY FRIEND: (5 b m by Natural Selection – My Friend Lucy) – Appears to be outclassed in this field and is unlikely to be a contender as her past performances suggest she may struggle to keep up with the pace.
2. POWER RANKING: (5 b h by Casual Trick – Escandalosa) – Has a consistent record of running well over the straight track but running against these doesn’t inspire confidence. Power Rank may place, but a win seems unlikely.
3. MARCH AND SHOOT : (5 b h by Nasheet – Lead Vale) – After a strong third-place finish behind Milos AND Digital One over seven furlongs (1,400m) on June 29,
March and Shoot could be a dark horse in this race. He has the potential to earn a placing again, especially if he can build on that recent performance.
4. BURLAP: (4 b c by Casual Trick – Fedora) – Is expected to put in a good effort.
Burlap’s breeding and past performances suggest he has the ability to compete at this level, making him a horse to watch.
5. POSING ALREADY: (5 b h by Northern Giant – Geisha’s Glory) – Although he has a preference for this distance his overall form doesn’t suggest he’ll have a significant impact on the race. He may struggle to keep up with the leaders. Note: Figure 8 will be on.
6. FEARLESS SOUL: (4 ch c by Soul Warrior – Rumble) – Despite showing little in his three races at this level Fearless Soul may finally be ready to run his best race. However, even if he does it’s unlikely to be enough to secure a win.
7. KWAKU: (6 b h by Casual Trick – Darlin) – Returns to competitive racing after a 181-day break.
Kwaku lacks current form and fitness and is unlikely to win; will be safe to bypass.
8. SUNSET SILHOUTTE: (5 b m by Northern Giant – Ahwhofah) – Prefers racing over longer distances.
Sunset Silhoutte will likely struggle with the shorter distance in this race. Expect her to be outpaced here.
9. PROVOCATIVA (USA): (5 dk b/br m by Protonico – Audacious) – Should not be a contender here. Note: Figure 8 will be off.
10. CHOCOMO (USA): (3 b c by Back Talk – Chocolate Chippi) – A good start who was a winner over this distance on July 1 when leading home rivals by 1¾ in 1:01.3.
Chocomo should be considered a top choice in this race.
11. HEROINE: (5 ch m by Soul Warrior – Rock ‘A’ Way) – Out of her depth here.
Heroine lacks the necessary experience and quality to compete with the other horses in the field.
12. DIGITAL ONE (USA): (3 b f by Uncle Lino – Legal Redemption) – On paper, the horse to beat.
Digital One has raced three times this season without a victory over six, eight, and seven furlongs. Despite this, she is expected to perform well due to her class and strong preparation.
Digital One should be cherry-ripe for this race, and having been the class horse in the line-up she could return to winning ways. Although she is running over this distance for the first time Digital One has worked really well and should set the record straight.
