JAAA boss gives thumbs up to training camp
PARIS, France — Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) President Garth Gayle has hailed the two-week training camp in Stuttgart, Germany, as a massive success ahead of the Olympic Games.
He said all the athletes who attended the camp were very upbeat and in high spirits going into this weekend’s start of the Paris Games.
The camp, which ended on Wednesday, was held at the Landessportverband, Baden-Wurttemberg training facility in Stuttgart.
Gayle told the Jamaica Observer that over 40 athletes took part in the camp, which ran from July 12-24, and they all had a great time thanks to the excellent vibe within the group during their stay in Stuttgart.
“We are very happy that the camp has achieved all its objectives,” said Gayle.
“Our intent from day one was to ensure that the Jamaican athletes, following the National Championships, would be able to train together and develop the chemistry needed, especially in the case of the relays, which is a team format versus an athlete competing in their individual event.
“The camaraderie and the spirit were very high, and the camp has proven once again, true to its objectives, that coaches were able to work with the athletes in all the disciplines,” Gayle noted.
He highlighted that the training facilities in Stuttgart were of world-class standards and, therefore, all of the athletes’ needs and wants were well taken care of.
“Also, there were two high points of the camp. Those athletes who had their competitions in the various Grand Prix or the Continental Tour competitions were able to go and compete and return safely to the camp,” Gayle pointed out.
“Secondly, we were able to assist two other NACAC members who came late to us asking us to allow their athletes to be a part of the camp, so we were very happy that we were able to include them also as part of our camp,” he said.
Reigning Olympic Games 110m hurdles champion Hansle Parchment, national sprinting star Oblique Seville, along with Roshawn Clarke, Ackeem Blake, Jaheel Hyde, Lamara Distin, Natoya Goule-Toppin, Shashalee Forbes, and Alana Reid were among some of the athletes in attendance at the camp.
Gayle said the JAAA and the municipality of Stuttgart have now formed a very strong bond, which will help his association in the future.
“This JAAA camp was a success that cannot be questioned by any group or entity at all. The highest point of note is that the bond that has now been established between the municipality of Stuttgart and the JAAA is now firmly in place, and we look forward to future collaborations. All the medical necessities were in place, and all our athletes had the medical attention that they needed,” he stated.
