Mills says Seville ready for action
STUTTGART, Germany — Glen Mills, coach of Jamaican sprinter Oblique Seville, says his young charge is highly motivated ahead of the start of this month’s Olympic Games in Paris, having recovered from abductor and upper-quad injuries.
Mills told the Jamaica Observer that Seville picked up the injuries during the final of the men’s 100m at the JAAA/Puma National Senior Championships, which caused him to miss a lot of training time.
He noted that the 23-year-old, who is one of the favourites for the gold medal in the men’s 100m in Paris, was treated for his injuries by renowned German doctor Dr Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt in Germany.
Seville had his first extensive training session on Monday in Stuttgart, since recovering from his injuries. Mills stated he was very pleased with his efforts.
“He didn’t do badly but he is highly motivated and so we will see how it goes,” said Mills. “We are running against time but we will do the best we can,” he said.
The veteran coach, who guided legendary retired Jamaican sprint icon Usain Bolt, expressed delight at seeing Seville back on the track. He is happy with Seville’s efforts in training as the young sprinter looks to compete in his second Olympic Games in Paris.
“Today [Monday] was the first day that we did that kind of explosive running, because the truth is that he got hurt in the final of the national trials and he was not able to train for a while,” Mills added.
“He has been in Germany for over a week, being treated, and so we are just starting to get him back up to the level where he was.”
Dr Müller-Wohlfahrt is regarded as one of the best orthopaedic doctors in the world. He has worked with Bolt, Bayern Munich footballers, and boxer Wladimir Klitschko in the past.
Seville, who finished fourth in the final of the men’s 100m event at last year’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, will enter the Olympic Games with a season’s best and personal best time of 9.82 seconds. His time is the fourth fastest in the world this year, behind his countryman Kishane Thompson who is the global leader with his 9.77.
The heats of the men’s 100m event are scheduled to begin on August 3.
