Amber buys 50% stake in On Time Taxi
AMBER Group has bought a 50 per cent stake in On Time Taxi and the move will see it “disrupting” and “redefining” Jamaica’s public passenger vehicle industry.
The cost of the stake was not disclosed but a release from Amber Group said the taxi service will be rebranded as Amber On Time.
“This strategic partnership aims to transform the market by integrating advanced apps with innovative AI features, enhancing user experience and safety standards,” the release added.
It said the deal will see all On Time Taxis being equipped with physical panic buttons for passengers, armed security response, and a platform backed by Amber Connect’s real time tracking with AI-enabled route and dispatch management functions.
“Advanced AI dashcams will allow superior driver behaviour monitoring, promote safer driving habits, and help reduce the likelihood of accidents, thereby lowering insurance premiums for operators. This focus on safety and efficiency not only will enhance the passenger experience but also will support increased financial health of taxi operators,” the release continued.
Dushyant Savadia, CEO of Amber Group and who called the partnership “a transformative leap” for taxi services in Jamaica added that, “By integrating our advanced tech solutions with On Time Taxi’s operational prowess we are not only enhancing safety but also demonstrating the power and potential of local businesses. I chose to make this move now because the public passenger vehicle industry urgently needs support — and it’s time for Jamaican people to have access to advanced taxi technology. Our goal is to make all these innovations available to the entire PPV industry in Jamaica and level the playing field with overseas operators.’’
Meanwhile Phillip Fearon, CEO of On Time Taxi, pointed out: “Both Amber and On Time are incredibly strong brands individually, and together we’re poised to disrupt the industry and deliver unparalleled service to our passengers and enhance safety levels like never before. By equipping On Time Taxi with cutting edge technology Amber Group is demonstrating that local companies can compete head-to-head with global entities operating in Jamaica.”
Amber said the deal will also empower local taxi services against global giants. It said its solutions ensure compliance with local laws and a deep understanding of the Jamaican market, coupled with genuine care for the community.
“This partnership is a bold step towards showcasing the capability and resilience of Jamaican businesses in the face of external competition.”
It also said it shows that home-grown companies can innovate and thrive, ensuring a safer and more secure experience for all passengers.
The announcement of the Amber/On Time Taxi acquisition and merger comes as Amber is getting ready to launch another taxi service, this time in Colombia. The service, to be called GoYa, is a joint venture with GPSEC Columbia and will be a ride-sharing service similar to Uber.
