Shawn-D Thompson sets another PB in Finland
Jamaica’s Commonwealth Games finalist Shawn-D Thompson extended his hot run when he improved on his personal best in the long jump for the second time in a week with 8.22m (1.4m/s) while competing in Finland.
At the World Athletics Continental Tour-Challenger meeting Motonet GP Joensuu at Keskusurheilkentta in Joensuu on Saturday, Thompson won for the third consecutive time in Europe with a wind-aided 8.51m (2.3m/s), but his second-best mark of 8.22m (1.4m/s) was wind legal and surpassed the 8.15m he jumped a week ago at another meet in Finland.
The Sprintec athlete who was fourth at the JAAA National Championships last month had a solid series with four legal marks over 8.00m.
Dominica’s Tristan James was second with a wind-aided 7.81m (2.4m/s), while Kalle Salminen of Finland was third with a wind-aided 7.74m (2.1m/s).
Samantha Hall, who is expected to join the Jamaican pre-Olympic Games camp in Germany, had her final prep meet, winning the women’s discus throw with 54.10m, the best of her three legal throws.
Two Finnish throwers finished behind her — Katri Hirvonen, 51.67m, and Sanni Kuparinen, 49.27m.
Oshane Bailey was third in the men’s 100m, running a wind-aided 10.29 (2.1m/s) after he ran 10.33 seconds (4.0m/s) in the preliminary round.
St Vincent’s Earl Simmonds won with 10.11 seconds and South Africa’s Gift Leotlea was second with 10.28 seconds.
