Operations resume at Sangster International Airport after security breach involving a ‘gun lighter’
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Operations have resumed at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, following a security breach involving a gun lighter.
The breach had resulted in delays with the processing of departing flights on Sunday.
The announcement was made by airport’s management team and Transport Minister Daryl Vaz.
It was reported that at approximately 1:00 pm, an item which appeared to be a firearm, passed through the preboard passenger screening machine manned by port security officers.
According to airport management, the item was spotted in a bag on the screening machine after the passenger had passed through and entered the departure lounge.
As a result, the airport management triggered full emergency security procedures which led to the locating of the passenger and the bag, however, the item seen on the screening machine image was not immediately found.
This led to a further search within the terminal for possible dumping of the item. The item, a gun lighter, was later discovered.
The airport police were involved in this emergency procedure.
The officials had said the processing of departing flights would be delayed, which could have a knock-on effect on the accommodation of incoming flights, possibly resulting in the diversion of some flights to the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston.
