Jardin des Plantes
The Style Observer Gardening series, Postcards from Paris, continues at Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle (MNHN), home of the capital city’s oldest botanical garden, Jardin des Plantes; a collaboration of scientists and gardeners.
Housing 11 gardens, the luscious Jardin des Plantes affords both locals and tourists the opportunity to learn about the historical monument and everything horticulture. Our immediate spotlight is on the School of Botany, the Squares of the Perspective, the Alpine Garden, and the Rose Garden.
The School of Botany reflects the history of plant evolution whilst the Alpine Garden houses over 2,000 mountain species and the Rose Garden approximately 390 species of roses. The Squares of the Perspective were designed to respect the principles of the French garden which typically includes rectangular reflecting pools or circular beds.
