Sangster airport ‘largely unaffected’ by worldwide IT glitch
ST JAMES, Jamaica — The Sangster International Airport (SIA) in Montego Bay says its systems have largely not been impacted by a massive IT outage affecting airport operators across the world.
“Our operations at MBJ are currently normal,” Sharon Hislop-Holt, Commercial Business Development and Marketing Manager for SIA operator MBJ Airports, told Observer Online.
“We are very resilient and have the ability to withstand certain things,” she said about the global outage which also affected airlines, banks, TV channels and other business across the world.
Hislop-Holt said there were a few flight delays and at least one cancellation, but nothing major.
“One flight cancelled, a Spirit Airlines. We have some delays, if you check our websites all the delays are there but only one Spirit flight cancelled due to that,” she said.
Cybersecurity company CrowdStrike said Friday that the outages were caused by one of its routine software updates.
Aviation officials in the United States briefly grounded all planes, while airlines elsewhere cancelled or delayed flights, as systems running Microsoft Windows crashed, according to AFP.
Some airports told planes they could not land, while in others airline staff began checking in passengers manually, it reported.
However, SIA remains operational in the face of those challenges.
“It’s kind of connected but what we have here is not being impacted by the challenges there,” Hislop-Holt said.
“We’ll continue to monitor our systems locally,” she added.
